Overview
This Degree environmental health practitioner (degree) apprenticeship standard will provide you with a level 6, integrated degree qualification. This apprenticeship standard was approved on the 14/06/2019 and typically takes 48 months to complete. However, it is important to note that the duration of the apprenticeship standard stated does not include the End-Point Assessment period.
What the course covers
The broad purpose of this profession is to act as advisers, educators, consultants and enforcement officers, enabling people to live and work in safe, healthy environments. This could include inspecting food premises and workplaces for food safety and health and safety compliance, monitoring air quality, undertaking emergency interventions, safety and noise control at large events, dealing with dishonest landlords, investigating food poisoning outbreaks, licensing tattoo parlours and investigating workplace accidents.
Environmental health practitioners work in the public sector, typically in local authorities, but also in private businesses. You will work in a range of environments, and spend most of your time outside or with businesses or members of the public.
Environmental health practitioners may specialise in one of the following areas:
- Environmental protection including noise, air, water and land pollution
- Food safety
- Health and safety in the workplace
- Private sector housing including
- Public health including infectious disease control, smoke-free legislation
- Port health
You will be responsible for managing your own caseload, working independently and as part of a wider team of professionals. You will exercise initiative and professional judgement, including at times when quick decisions must be made.
