Handling and caring for horses

Overview

The equine groom was approved for delivery on 13/04/2018. This Intermediate apprenticeship standard awards you with a level 2, qualification when completed. The usual duration of this apprenticeship is 12 months, but this does not include the End-Point Assessment Period.

What the course covers

The purpose of this apprenticeship standard is to train apprentices in the vocational skills of an equine groom. This includes feeding, grooming, cleaning equipment, handling, preparing, exercising the horses and carrying out routine farmyard duties.

An equine groom may handle a variety of horses in different working environments. It is essential to adhere to strict health and safety practices and be comfortable working outdoors during all weather conditions. You may also assist with the preparation, transport and care for horses at competitions, races, sales, shows and other public appearances.

You will need dedication, commitment, compassion, as well as an interest in animal care. This is a practical professional where apprentices will be able to get hands-on experience from the outset. You will work independently under the supervision of a senior member of the team, or as part of a wider team of professionals including blacksmiths and farriers.

You will develop core knowledge and skills in a range of areas including, horse handling, saddlery use, horse anatomy, physiology and welfare and safe working procedures.
