Overview

The fishmonger was approved for delivery on 16/05/2017. This Intermediate apprenticeship standard awards you with a level 2, qualification when completed. The usual duration of this apprenticeship is 24 months, but this does not include the End-Point Assessment Period.

What the course covers

A Fishmonger is responsible for preparing and selling fish and seafood to members of the public. You will require top-class customer service and selling skills, and a deep understanding of the fish and shellfish industry, species identification and preparation methods. Daily work will involve interacting with consumers, answering any questions they have, and helping them to make decisions on which fish to purchase.

Food safety and quality produce are of top priority and importance to a fishmonger; you must always comply with the relevant food hygiene and safety regulations. You will perform several tasks that include handling raw food materials and will develop filleting and other knife skills. You will also learn how to display products in an attractive way to entice customers into purchasing their products.

Qualified fishmongers work in a range of different business types, including supermarket fish counters, independent high street fishmongers, fish stalls at markets, and mobile fish vans. If you excel in the profession, there could be an opportunity to open your own fishmongering business or progress elsewhere in the food and drink industry.
