Overview

This Advanced food and drink maintenance engineer apprenticeship standard will provide you with a level 3, qualification. This apprenticeship standard was approved on the 09/12/2014 and typically takes 42 months to complete. However, it is important to note that the duration of the apprenticeship standard stated does not include the End-Point Assessment period.

What the course covers

The broad role of a Food and Drink Maintenance Engineer is to maintain machinery used in the food and drinks sector. This includes identifying and resolving faults to optimise production levels. Depending on the type of product, engineering activities will consist of routine maintenance, fault finding, diagnosis, testing and commissioning.

You will develop the core knowledge, skills and behaviours required of a Food and Drinks Maintenance Engineer, including a sound understanding of legislation and regulations related to food safety. Apprentices will also have the opportunity to specialise in one of the following occupations:

  • Mechanical Maintenance Engineer: Food and Drink Mechanical Maintenance Engineers will mainly work with mechanical equipment and production systems.
  • Multi-Skilled Maintenance Engineer: Food and Drink Multi-Skilled Maintenance Engineers work with mechanical and electrical equipment, plus highly automated programmable control systems.

The food and drinks industry is highly regulated, so both Food and Drink Mechanical and Multi-Skilled Engineers must ensure that all maintenance activities are conducted safely and always comply with food safety legislation.
