Overview
This Advanced garment maker apprenticeship standard will provide you with a level 3, qualification. This apprenticeship standard was approved on the 27/09/2019 and typically takes 24 months to complete. However, it is important to note that the duration of the apprenticeship standard stated does not include the End-Point Assessment period.
What the course covers
The primary role of a garment maker is to produce clothing items, including costumes, bespoke pieces, tailored suits, creative designer womenswear or menswear, and couture pieces as seen on catwalks. The garments you produced may be one-off pieces for customers, or replicated and sold in retail.
Garment makers are creative, interested in fashion and have excellent attention to detail. You will learn how the details of all stages garment making, from design conception through to the final execution of the product. Garment making is a highly skilled profession; apprentices will develop many technical skills, including proficient and safe use of a sewing machine as well as hand-sewing and embellishment techniques. You will handle different materials and trimmings, appropriate to the design, always working to a high level of accuracy.
You may often be working under pressure in an effort to meet customer, season, or fashion show deadlines. You will interact with other professionals in the fashion and textile industry, including designers, pattern cutters, fabric cutters, quality controllers and machinists. You will take pride in the work you produce, and have responsibility for the assembly, finish and look of the end product.
