Overview
This Intermediate gas network operative apprenticeship standard will provide you with a level 2, qualification. This apprenticeship standard was approved on the 22/10/2015 and typically takes 24 months to complete. However, it is important to note that the duration of the apprenticeship standard stated does not include the End-Point Assessment period.
What the course covers
The primary role of a Gas network operative is to construct, maintain and repair gas network infrastructure, in an effort to provide a reliable service to domestic, commercial and industrial users.
Apprentices will learn to use a range of powered equipment, hand tools and machinery, including diggers, rollers and forklifts. You will be responsible for responding to gas network infrastructure emergencies, such as gas leaks, in line with strict health and safety procedures. You will understand when to escalate an incident to senior team members. An essential part of the role involves keeping an up-to-date and accurate record of work completed, which may include producing paperwork or keeping a computerised record.
Daily work will involve interacting with a range of professionals including managers, network technicians and engineers, delivery drivers, reinstatement teams and administration staff. Gas network operatives typically work in a small team and will be responsible for the quality of their own work.
Work must be completed in compliance with strict health, safety and environmental regulations. To work as a Gas network operative, apprentices must qualify and register with the Street Works Register.
