Apprenticeship Standards Geospatial Mapping and Science Specialist (Degree)

Geospatial Mapping and Science Specialist (Degree)

Analysing geographic data to provide support for mapping, global positioning systems (GPS) and satellite navigation.

Overview

The geospatial mapping and science specialist (degree) was approved for delivery on 27/03/2018. This Higher apprenticeship standard awards you with a level 6, non-integrated degree qualification when completed. The usual duration of this apprenticeship is 60 months, but this does not include the End-Point Assessment Period.

What the course covers

Geospatial mapping and science specialists interpret and analyse data relating to geographic position on the earth’s surface, known as geospatial data. You will learn how to use leading-edge digital technology such as laser scanning and remote sensing and imagery.

Alongside the core knowledge and skills, this apprenticeship standard allows for apprentices to specialise in one of the following four options:

  • Geospatial engineering: This role involves creating complex layers of interconnected geographic information for urban development such as roads, buildings and bridges.
  • Hydrography: This specialism focuses on the surveying and chartings of water, such as seabeds, harbours, lakes and rivers.
  • Utilities: This is a broad role involving the identification and labelling of underground public utilities, such as lines for telecommunication, electricity distribution, natural gas, cable television, fibre optics, traffic lights, street lights, storm drains, water mains, and waste pipes.
  • Geospatial surveying: This involves the mapping of land, boundaries and land registration.

Following successful completion, this apprenticeship standard will provide apprentices with the knowledge, skills and competencies to become registered members of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors or the Chartered Institution of Civil Engineering Surveyors.
