Overview
The golf greenkeeper was approved for delivery on 26/03/2015. This Intermediate apprenticeship standard awards you with a level 2, qualification when completed. The usual duration of this apprenticeship is 24 months, but this does not include the End-Point Assessment Period.
What the course covers
A Golf Greenkeeper is responsible for the maintenance, care and overall appearance of a golf course. It will be your responsibility to maintain a high-quality playing surface, ensuring the course offers a consistent challenge and an enjoyable experience for golfing customers. You will primarily be working outdoors, in all weather conditions throughout the year.
A golf course has four turfgrass areas: greens, tees, fairways and areas of rough. Each area requires unique maintenance which you will achieve through learning how to operate a range of equipment and machinery safely. You may also work with broader environmental and ecological operations on the golf course and surrounding environment including bunker maintenance, planting turf, cutting back trees, shrubs and developing wildlife habitats. You will learn the principles of gardening and garden care, including the primary aspects of soil and plant biology, and understand how to identify a number of grasses, weeds, pests, diseases, turf disorders, plants and trees.
This apprenticeship standard is recognised by the British and International Golf Greenkeepers Association; apprentice will be registered with BIGGA throughout the apprenticeship, and upon completion will be eligible to become a BIGGA Accredited Greenkeeper.
