Overview

The harbour master was approved for delivery on 18/12/2019. This Higher apprenticeship standard awards you with a level 6, non-integrated degree qualification when completed. The usual duration of this apprenticeship is 48 months, but this does not include the End-Point Assessment Period.

What the course covers

The purpose of this apprenticeship standard is to provide apprentices with the knowledge, skills, and competencies to achieve a successful career in the maritime industry as a Harbour master. Harbours, ports and marinas are used for a variety of purposes including recreation, commercial trade and defence. The Harbour master is responsible for enforcing regulations and codes of practice in a port, harbour or marina to ensure the safety of vessel navigation, the security of the harbour, the protection of the marine environment, and the safe operation of the port facilities.

Daily work will involve interacting with a variety of professionals including ship masters, enforcement officers, stakeholders, marine pilots, port operations and commercial staff, as well as members of the public and customers.

You will have the power to permit vessels to enter or leave the port, as well as overseeing vessel traffic movement in the port approach and the port area. You will also oversee the planning and execution of port marine operations such as designating where vessels should lie within the harbour and vessel traffic management services.
