Healthcare Cleaning Operative

Ensuring the healthcare environment is hygienic and clean.

Overview

This Intermediate healthcare cleaning operative apprenticeship standard will provide you with a level 2, qualification. This apprenticeship standard was approved on the 03/02/2020 and typically takes 12 months to complete. However, it is important to note that the duration of the apprenticeship standard stated does not include the End-Point Assessment period.

What the course covers

The role of a Healthcare cleaning operative is clean, disinfect and decontaminate healthcare environments, such as hospitals, care homes, doctors surgeries, dental surgeries, and childcare settings. Healthcare environments require specific attention to infection control, safety and sanitation for the health and wellbeing of service users.

You will work to maintain all standards in compliance with the National Standard of Healthcare Cleanliness regulations. You will learn to operate a range of equipment, including specialist machinery and technology used for decontamination processes. Apprentices will be responsible for organising and prioritising their own workload and be able to respond to changes in the working environment when necessary.

This apprenticeship standard will enable apprentices to develop expert knowledge specific to healthcare cleaning and hygiene procedures. This includes an understanding of the use of PPE, the NHS cleaning specification, biological waste disposal, and the safe disposal of spent solutions. Part of the role will involve responding to an emergency, and urgent cleaning requests, such as rapid response cleans of bodily fluid, chemical spillage, and hazardous waste.
