Overview
The healthcare science associate was approved for delivery on 31/10/2016. This Higher apprenticeship standard awards you with a level 4, qualification when completed. The usual duration of this apprenticeship is 24 months, but this does not include the End-Point Assessment Period.
What the course covers
A Healthcare scientist associate with support the work of healthcare scientist practitioners and Clinical Scientists in performing high quality, safe diagnostic, therapeutic and monitoring technical and scientific procedures. You will work within a healthcare setting, such as a hospital or doctors surgery.
A Healthcare science associate will undertake a wide range of activities. This includes contributing to the safe, effective and efficient functioning of diagnostic or therapeutic services and quality controlling the technical processing of biological samples and physiological and other diagnostic tests. You may also be involved in supporting junior staff in learning the skills and behaviours of those who work in healthcare science.
The specific scientific procedures you perform will depend on the department in which you are employed:
- Life Sciences: investigations would include blood count microscopy, antibiotic assays, endocrine assessments, and immunology assays.
- Physiological Sciences: fitting and removing ambulatory blood pressure monitors, ophthalmic assessments of the structure and function of the eye, and audiometry procedures.
- Physical Sciences: nuclear medicine imaging, decontaminating, repairing and maintaining medical devices, managing technical data and writing technical reports.
