Overview

This Advanced heavy vehicle service and maintenance technician apprenticeship standard will provide you with a level 3, qualification. This apprenticeship standard was approved on the 07/09/2016 and typically takes 36 months to complete. However, it is important to note that the duration of the apprenticeship standard stated does not include the End-Point Assessment period.

What the course covers

A Heavy vehicle service and maintenance technician is responsible for servicing, inspecting and repairing heavy vehicles and associated trailers, categorised by the Department of Transport as category N2 or N3. Daily tasks range from replacing simple parts through to solving complex faults with the use of diagnostic methods and equipment.

The purpose of this apprenticeship standard is to equip apprentices with the knowledge, skills and competencies to achieve a successful career as a Heavy vehicle service and maintenance technician. This includes learning how to operate hand-held tools, machinery, and technology safely. You will develop a sound understanding of how to inspect a heavy vehicle ensuring the standards of the Driver and vehicle licensing agency (DVLA) are met. You will have strong problem-solving skills and an ability to diagnose complex technical faults with the vehicle.

Completion of this standard will allow apprentices to meet the professional standards for registration as an Engineering Technician with the Engineering Council. You will also have the opportunity to progress to Master Technician later on in your career.
