What the course covers

A Highway Electrical Maintenance and Installation Operative is a multi-skilled operative. You will be able to carry out both the installation of equipment, such as installing street lighting columns or traffic signal poles and the maintenance of that equipment. This could involve diagnosing and correcting faults when equipment is non-operational and changing lamps upon failure.

Alongside the installation and maintenance of electrical systems, you will also provide emergency attendance and replacement works, for instance, after a road traffic accident where a vehicle has hit a streetlight. You will be responsible for working efficiently, effectively and safely to keep costs within budget, and ensure works are completed per drawings, specification of works and instructions under the guidance of your supervisor. Apprentices will learn essential communication skills, including how to interact with other professionals as well as members of the public.

There are many sub-sectors within the highways electrical sector, apprentices will have the option to specialise in one of these, depending on their preference and employer type. Specialisms include street lighting, traffic signals, safety cameras, and highway communications.
