Overview

Approved for delivery on the 19/08/2016, the highways electrician or service operative, Advanced apprenticeship standard provides a level 3, upon completion. This apprenticeship will typically take 24 months to complete, not including the End-Point Assessment Period.

What the course covers

The purpose of this standard is to train apprentices with the skills, competencies and abilities to succeed in the multi-skilled profession of a Highway electrician. You will develop an understanding of a broad number of electrical services on UK roads and motorways, including street lighting, traffic signals, safety cameras and highway communications.

The primary role of a Highways electrician is to install, maintain, service and repair electrical systems and equipment on roads and motorways. This includes diagnosing and resolving faults, as well as routine repairs such as the replacement of streetlamp light bulbs. You will be responsible for ensuring all work is performed in compliance with up-to-date health, safety and environmental regulations.

This apprenticeship standard will provide apprentices with technical skills in electrical systems installation and maintenance. This includes how to instal and connect components of highway electrical equipment such as cables, fuses, distribution boards. You will understand how to carry out relevant functional tests on this equipment and keep accurate records of electrical test certificates.
