What the course covers

This apprenticeship is a training course for the role of an experienced and specialist lab scientist. They will carry out all practical, novel and established procedures and activities within the lab, using specialised laboratory equipment and instruments. A laboratory scientist must ensure the uniformity, accuracy, consistency, reliability, reproductivity and integrity of all scientific tests completed within the laboratory. The technical tests and activities which apprentices will carry out will be within a particular area of science, depending on your chosen specialism. For example, the laboratory may work in Chemical Science, Life Sciences, Research & Development, or Analytical sciences.

In all of these areas, working safely and ethically is essential. You will analyse and interpret and evaluate scientific information, concepts and ideas according to the relevant scientific guidelines, and use this data to develop subsequent experiments and investigations. These experiments help to solve problems within a technical system or to aid a particular objective of the company.

Laboratory scientists work across all scientific industries and work for organisations including chemical, biotechnology, formulated products, consumer, pharmaceutical, nuclear and analytical services. The apprenticeship will train you to work autonomously, with the confidence and independence to carry out technical tasks without immediate supervision.
