Apprenticeship Standards Laboratory Technician

Laboratory Technician

Working within a laboratory team to provide technical support for testing, experiments and scientific investigation.

Overview

This Advanced laboratory technician apprenticeship standard will provide you with a level 3, qualification. This apprenticeship standard was approved on the 09/12/2014 and typically takes 24 months to complete. However, it is important to note that the duration of the apprenticeship standard stated does not include the End-Point Assessment period.

What the course covers

Laboratory technicians follow technical procedures to ensure all areas of the laboratory meet quality standards. The apprenticeship will equip you with the skills to provide support for one-off testing, and a variety of technical activities carried out within a laboratory environment. You will work at the forefront of technology to carry out routine testing and manufacturing.

As well as independent work, apprentices should expect to work as part of a laboratory team including the laboratory manager, and other colleagues. You will also interact with other departments such as manufacturing, procurement and quality, internal customers such as medical staff, teaching staff and students. This collaborative work requires all apprentices to be effective communicators who can confidently relay data and scientific knowledge between different teams of people. For this, you may use online Laboratory Management Systems, as well as paper-based.

As many organisations operate under highly regulated conditions, all laboratory technicians must work safely and ethically in all scenarios. For example, all preparatory work for an experiment must be in line with experiment guidelines.
