Live Event Technician

Prepare and set up technical equipment for live events.

Overview

This Advanced live event technician apprenticeship standard will provide you with a level 3, qualification. This apprenticeship standard was approved on the 30/11/2018 and typically takes 30 months to complete. However, it is important to note that the duration of the apprenticeship standard stated does not include the End-Point Assessment period.

What the course covers

Live event technicians prepare and set up technical equipment for live events including festivals, concerts, theatrical performances, conferences, exhibitions and showcases. As a live event technician, you will carry out both routine and one-off technical preparation, ultimately specialising in either light, sound or audio. As well as knowing how to operate functioning technical systems, apprentices will learn how to store, pick, maintain and build the components that form these systems.

Throughout the apprenticeship, you will gain experience both in the event environment and outside of the event. On the day of an event, it is your responsibility to transform the venue into a functioning event and back again in very little time. This work is fast-paced, and there can be a lot of pressure to complete a job. Outside of the event, you will be responsible for the care and maintenance of the technical equipment; this includes its storage, repair, control and servicing.

Apprentices must be proactive and independent workers to work with minimal supervision and be able to identify areas for improvement and implement process changes, as well as working as part of a larger production team.
