Overview
The mammography associate was approved for delivery on 22/08/2018. This Higher apprenticeship standard awards you with a level 4, qualification when completed. The usual duration of this apprenticeship is 12 months, but this does not include the End-Point Assessment Period.
What the course covers
A mammogram is a two-view x-ray test which can screen for breast cancer. In this role, you will work within the breast imaging workforce comprised of a multidisciplinary team within a hospital or community health setting, such as a mobile screening unit. This apprenticeship will train you to undertake routine mammography on individuals who have signs of breast cancer. As a mammography associate, you must be technically skilled to operate the complex machine, and you be responsible for monitoring the equipment function and performance. The mammography images that you produce must be of the highest quality to meet the NHS Breast Screening Programme (NHSBSP) standards.
On this apprenticeship, you will develop the critical knowledge to understand breast cancer symptoms, as well as breast anatomy, physiology and pathology. As this can be a distressing procedure for many people, it is essential that you act ethically and respectful at all times, demonstrating cultural awareness, empathy and compassion to all.
Some of your primary responsibilities will include preparing individuals and equipment for mammography, reassure, advise and support individuals, promoting and maintaining a professional practice and performing quality control tests on equipment.
