Marina and Boatyard Operative

Delivering a variety of operations and services to boats and vessels in boatyards and marinas.

Overview

The marina and boatyard operative was approved for delivery on 17/12/2018. This Intermediate apprenticeship standard awards you with a level 2, qualification when completed. The usual duration of this apprenticeship is 18 months, but this does not include the End-Point Assessment Period.

What the course covers

Marinas can be found on the coast or inland, on rivers and waterway docks, or basins with mooring or services for vessels; boatyards are waterside locations where vessels are built, stored and maintained. The job of a marina and boatyard operative is to perform daily functions and operations in these areas related to the care of the vessels and the private and commercial services on offer.

Some of the most common duties you will undertake as an apprentice in this role include lifting vessels, launching, high-pressure washing, storing, berthing and moving vessels on the water. To ensure the safety of all operatives, members of the public and staff, you must work safely and carefully at all times, complying with legislation, regulations and codes of conduct.

You will learn to use a variety of equipment to conduct regular maintenance checks and activities around the marina and boatyard, such as work on pontoon systems, buildings and storage cradles. This can be a public-facing role, and you must engage with customers and other boating staff helpfully and politely.

As an apprentice, you may have the opportunity to specialise in an area such as fuel, rigging, retail, or lock and bridge operation.
