Overview
This Advanced marine engineer apprenticeship standard will provide you with a level 3, qualification. This apprenticeship standard was approved on the 19/01/2018 and typically takes 48 months to complete. However, it is important to note that the duration of the apprenticeship standard stated does not include the End-Point Assessment period.
What the course covers
Marine engineers have two primary strands of work; they design marine equipment and boat layouts to solve problems and meet requirements, whilst also installing, maintaining and repairing marine engines, ancillary systems and equipment. As well as this, marine engineers produce boat engineering systems to a specification in a technical drawing. As an apprentice marine engineer, you will become confident using tools, measuring equipment, and apparatus to assemble, strip, repair and rebuild marine components.
An essential skill you will develop as a marine engineer is the ability to comply with organisational and statutory health and safety regulations. At all times, your work must be safe and not be endangering yourself or others. As well as independent engineering, you should expect to work as part of a larger team, often with boatbuilders or marine electricians.
You will develop problem-solving and logistical skills to ensure all design and engineering decisions are the most practical and efficient, as well as learning how to communicate and respond directly to customer or client needs. All marine engineers should demonstrate a commitment to quality throughout their apprenticeship, and a strong work ethic and a motivation for progression.
