Overview
The marine surveyor (degree) was approved for delivery on 03/07/2019. This Higher apprenticeship standard awards you with a level 6, non-integrated degree qualification when completed. The usual duration of this apprenticeship is 48 months, but this does not include the End-Point Assessment Period.
What the course covers
Marine surveyors inspect and examine a ships structure, equipment, machinery and systems to ensure they comply with the established regulation and rules. These rules regard outfitting, stability, construction, equipping, safety and operation. The surveyor is responsible for making a judgement on the quality of the vessel and highlighting any damage or potential for harm. Surveyors have the final say on a vessels suitability and fitness to operate. Clients and organisations can also commission a marine surveyor to determine the financial value of a vessel and its parts.
As an apprentice, you will be predominantly working autonomously, sometimes during the survey in challenging environments such as at height or in a confined space. However, you should expect to interact daily with a wide range of other marine workers such as the Captain, engineers, ship crew, maritime regulators, insurance loss adjusters, and commercial or private clients. You will develop a robust personal fitness from the physical work of the survey, which can often take place outside in all weather conditions. However, much of the pre-inspection work is carried out in an office.
Apprentices will develop excellent written communication and presentation skills as marine surveyors are in charge of collating their examinations into a thorough report.
