Overview
This Higher marine technical superintendent (degree) apprenticeship standard will provide you with a level 7, non-integrated degree qualification. This apprenticeship standard was approved on the 13/05/2019 and typically takes 36 months to complete. However, it is important to note that the duration of the apprenticeship standard stated does not include the End-Point Assessment period.
What the course covers
This is a shore-based and technical role which oversees the operations of vessels from an engineering perspective. Some of the task’s marine technical superintendents are responsible for include the planning and execution of refit and fleet time maintenance programmes, implementing compliance, and ensuring vessels are certified according to international maritime legislation. As an apprentice, you will be responsible for a much wider range of tasks than other onboard engineers; you will develop advanced skills in leadership and management, as well high financial and commercial proficiency and project management. The role requires an ability to remain up to date with emerging vessel technology such as cybersecurity and ship automation.
Throughout the apprenticeship, you will learn to handle emergencies and develop the skills needed for clear and logical, solutions-based thinking. In an emergency, it would be your responsibility to provide subject-specific expertise. Marine technical superintendents report to the Technical or Fleet manager for supervision and guidance.
This apprenticeship is a managerial role, all chief engineers will report to you, and it is your job to offer professional guidance as well as motivation and encouragement.
