Overview

Approved for delivery on the 10/05/2018, the maritime caterer, Intermediate apprenticeship standard provides a level 2, upon completion. This apprenticeship will typically take 24 months to complete, not including the End-Point Assessment Period.

What the course covers

This apprenticeship trains you to work onboard ships and vessels of various sizes, as part of a catering and hospitality team. Maritime caterers are in charge of preparing and serving food to both passengers and crew members onboard the ship. Apprentices will learn to prepare various dishes including fish, meat, poultry, vegetables, baked goods and dough products. This is a varied role. As well as the cooking and food preparation, you are responsible for food purchase and storage, taking into account budget and menu planning for various dietary requirements. Apprentices must be cautious of food endurance whilst at sea and select appropriate foods that will remain fresh throughout.

You will develop essential customer services skills by interacting with passengers and other crew members. You must at all times be considerate of the various schedules onboard the ship, and treat all passengers with respect. Maritime caterers will follow strict health and safety regulations to ensure that no passengers or hospitality staff are put in any danger due to kitchen activity.

As a maritime caterer, you will be introduced to nutritional information such as providing balanced meals and supporting well-being through food, as well as catering to different religious and cultural food requirements.
