Overview

The maritime electrical / mechanical mechanic was approved for delivery on 05/10/2018. This Intermediate apprenticeship standard awards you with a level 2, qualification when completed. The usual duration of this apprenticeship is 18 months, but this does not include the End-Point Assessment Period.

What the course covers

Maritime electrical/mechanical mechanics work for the Royal Navy and Merchant Navy. Their primary responsibilities include interpreting engineering diagrams and documents to complete the testing, diagnosis and maintenance of electrical, mechanical and fluid power equipment on ships and submarines. This equipment comprises of propulsion machines, weapons, sensors, reactors, and auxiliary systems such as water, air conditioning, logic controllers and power generators.

An apprentice on this course will develop expertise in the use of both standard and specialist test equipment and hand and machine tools. You will learn to use a variety of testing and measuring equipment processes to ensure that system performance meets the required specification. You must comply with all organisational safety requirements and statutory regulations, to ensure that safety of yourself, colleagues and the minimisation of pollution to the marine environment.

Maritime electrical/mechanical mechanics work at the cutting edge of new technology; you will become accustomed to using some of the most sophisticated mechanical technology to complete your daily tasks.

Apprentices must work as part of a mechanical team and understand the importance of equality and diversity within a workforce, showing respect for different cultures, skills and abilities. You will develop critical skills in communication and adaptability, to successfully share the workspace with others and work as a cohesive unit.
