What the course covers

Maritime operations officers work for HM coastguards, who are responsible for coordinating and initiating maritime search and response. As well as this emergency capacity, HM coastguards are also accountable for Pollution Response, Vessel Traffic Management, Maritime Safety and Maritime Security. Apprentices in this role will work in an operations room and will learn how to respond to maritime emergencies effectively. You will do this by answering emergency and routine calls and analysing information and data which may be useful to emergency response. It will be your responsibility to issue safety guidance and information to others, including members of the public, costal users and partner organisations.

One of the primary duties in this role is to ensure the safety of operations by maintaining Coastal Services equipment, by checking for faults and correct functionality. You will be responsible for assessing a request for air support and making recommendations of other appropriate resources to dispatch to incidents. Operations officers monitor incoming alerts to Maritime security and will pass on the relevant information to the appropriate authority. Throughout the apprenticeship, you will develop critical skills in information management and presentation, as it’s essential that all data is recorded to a correct standard and that databases remain up to date.
