Overview

The materials science technologist (degree) was approved for delivery on 03/07/2019. This Higher apprenticeship standard awards you with a level 6, non-integrated degree qualification when completed. The usual duration of this apprenticeship is 48 months, but this does not include the End-Point Assessment Period.

What the course covers

This apprenticeship trains you for the managerial role of a materials science technologist. The apprenticeship aims to equip you with the skills and knowledge to be able to lead teams who ensure the quality of materials. This is an engineering role which works with the performance of materials across a variety of industries and sectors; daily work focuses on ensuring materials are fit for purpose. This involves factors such as product innovation, performance, failure diagnosis, operational management, process and manufacturing. You may also be working in the positive advancement of material science by designing and developing new materials. To do this, you will develop the skills to choose correct materials and applications.

These skills primarily relate to the investigation and the analysis of data, as your daily tasks as a materials science technologist are likely to include gathering physical evidence, critical analyses, drawing conclusions and recommending resolutions and actions. Other daily tasks for apprentices include material testing, solving manufacturing issues, novel product development, laboratory management and technical sales. These tasks will vary depending on your employer.

Materials science technologists work across all materials industries such as pharmaceutical, engineering, construction and petrochemical.
