Using metal to fabricate small and large structures, from handheld items to infrastructure.

Overview

Approved for delivery on the 18/01/2019, the metal fabricator, Advanced apprenticeship standard provides a level 3, upon completion. This apprenticeship will typically take 42 months to complete, not including the End-Point Assessment Period.

What the course covers

This apprenticeship covers the construction and fabrication of any structures which can be made from metal. Found in the manufacturing engineering and construction engineering sectors, this role utilises metal configurations such as rolled steel joists, columns, channels, steel plates and metal sheets. Apprentices will learn how to use these metal items to manufacture ships, bridges, oil rigs, petro-chemical installations, cranes, platforms, aircraft, automotive, machinery parts and anything else that can be made out of metal.

Metal fabricators work collaboratively alongside planners, designers, supervisors, inspectors, pipefitters, welders, riggers, painters, steel erectors, stores personnel and anyone else involved in the production manufacturing or repair of metal structures. This will develop your teamwork and communication skills, as apprentices will learn how their role in the production line has an impact on many other people.

Throughout the apprenticeship, you will gain critical knowledge related to metal structures and fabrication such as how to interpret technical drawings, patterns and templates, how to set up and adjust equipment for metal fabrication, which is the appropriate tools and equipment to use for different structures and how to operate thermal joining equipment.
