Midwife (Degree)

The midwife (degree) was approved for delivery on 05/12/2018. This Higher apprenticeship standard awards you with a level 6, non-integrated degree qualification when completed. The usual duration of this apprenticeship is 48 months, but this does not include the End-Point Assessment Period.

Midwives provide essential practical support and emotional care to the mother, baby and family during the process of birth and pregnancy. They have expert knowledge of physiological birth care, as well as antenatal education and experience dealing with all complexities related to labour and pregnancy. Midwives usually work in the public sector for the NHS, but others work for private hospitals, or independently. Midwives work in a variety of locations as well as on a maternity ward, including in a woman’s home, GP surgeries, clinics, midwife-led units, and community centres.

Apprentices will be trained as the first point of contact for new mothers and their families. You will advocate for the rights, safety and care of the mother at all stages of the birth and the period that follows. As a coordinator of care, you will develop essential knowledge related to all elements of pregnancy and childbirth, including both medical focused and emotional well-being focused. Apprentices will learn to provide any necessary preventative measures, detect complications in the mother and baby, carry out any emergency measures, support access to the proper healthcare and promote a routine and safe birth.

A large part of the role is the provision of education and information regarding birth and parenthood, to the mother and those in her life. You will be responsible for antenatal classes and supporting a family as they prepare for parenthood, and will have expert knowledge regarding caring for new-borns.
