What the course covers

An apprentice on this course will learn to collect and sample mineral and construction products to test their quality. These material products include ready-mixed concrete, cement, mortar, asphalt, road building and high-speed rail products, precast and pre-stressed concrete. These products are all heavy construction products or final/end-use products, meaning any failures or poor-quality products can result in large issues in the end-use. It is the role of the apprentices on this course to remove any problems or poor-quality materials before they create a larger issue.

Mineral and construction product sampling and testing operators work under the supervision of a manager. Still, you must also feel confident working autonomously and making their own decisions regarding health and safety and construction legislation.

Some of the critical skills and abilities you will develop include collecting and sampling products, reporting your findings verbally and in writing, suggest ways to improve quality of products, prepare reports on quality measures, minimise waste of products, control raw materials, diagnose faults and use specialist equipment to grade various materials.
