Servicing light vehicles such as cars and vans by working on and maintaining their internal systems.
Overview
Approved for delivery on the 22/10/2015, the motor vehicle service and maintenance technician (light vehicle), Advanced apprenticeship standard provides a level 3, upon completion. This apprenticeship will typically take 36 months to complete, not including the End-Point Assessment Period.
What the course covers
This apprenticeship sits in the automotive retail industry, which employs over half a million people in the UK. Motor vehicle and maintenance technicians typically work in either a dealership with a focus on a particular manufacturer or in a smaller independent garage which deals with many different types of vehicles. This apprenticeship aims to train you to confidently and independently service and repair light vehicles within a garage setting, as well as at times helping with other operational elements of the garage.
Apprentices will learn how to service all systems within light vehicles. Some of the day to day technical jobs will include replacing simple parts, using diagnostic methods and equipment to deal with complex faults and servicing steering and suspension geometries. The apprenticeship is designed to equip you with all the skills, knowledge and behaviours to keep up with the emerging advanced automotive technology; you will learn by experience how new vehicles and systems need repairing and servicing.
The type of employer will also determine what other responsibilities you have. In a smaller independent garage, you may be asked to carry out functions in other departments, for example managing the delivery of your parts. Whereas in a larger dealership, you work more collaboratively with the other departments.
