Motorcycle Technician (Repair and Maintenance)

Repairing and servicing motorcycles, and any other vehicle in which the rider sits astride the frame.

Overview

The motorcycle technician (repair and maintenance) was approved for delivery on 24/09/2018. This Advanced apprenticeship standard awards you with a level 3, qualification when completed. The usual duration of this apprenticeship is 36 months, but this does not include the End-Point Assessment Period.

What the course covers

A motorcycle is a two-wheeled vehicle, powered by a motor and has no pedals; they need servicing and repairing by a specialist technician. This apprenticeship is the training for the role of motorcycle technicians. However, the skills you will learn are also applicable to other vehicles in which the rider sits astride the frame, such as motorised scooters, All-Terrain Vehicles (ATV’s) and tricycles.

A motorcycle technician tailors their work directly to the customer’s needs and requirements of the bike. For example, people use their motorcycle for leisure, commuting, commercial or for competitions. Each of these will require a different technical service; apprentices will learn how to give bespoke repairs and technical support to meet the client’s needs. The day to day tasks of a motorcycle mechanic includes replacing parts, using diagnostic methods and equipment to fix complex faults in the internal systems and providing high-quality inspections of motorcycles.

Apprentices will develop critical skills throughout the course, such as a strong problem-solving ability, to recognise which technical skills are needed. As well as this, you will gain the ability to retain theoretical knowledge of safety regulations and apply them to the working environment.
