What the course covers

The role of a museums and galleries technician is to design, manufacture and install bespoke displays and interpretation solutions. These may be in the form of mounts, showcases or individual labels for objects. The display solutions are typically made from Perspex, wood, or metal and can be very intricate; they are often protecting precious items. It is the responsibility of the museum and galleries technician to ensure that both temporary and permanent displays are installed within the correct time and budget.

As an apprentice, you will learn how to effectively plan a project, considering the technical and operational running of the exhibition. Other key responsibilities will include providing thorough documentation associated with collections management, risk assessment and handling objects. You will develop the fundamental skills necessary to handle precious items safely, as well as teaching others to handle them and preparing them for safe transit. You may be expected to design and produce appropriate travelling cases and storage.

Another critical and rewarding element of the job is community engagement and education sessions. As a museum and galleries technician, it is your job to assist learning sessions on objects to schools, community groups or individual clients, by supporting safe handing.
