Overview

This Intermediate nuclear health physics monitor apprenticeship standard will provide you with a level 2, qualification. This apprenticeship standard was approved on the 03/09/2015 and typically takes 24 months to complete. However, it is important to note that the duration of the apprenticeship standard stated does not include the End-Point Assessment period.

What the course covers

The purpose of this apprenticeship role is to protect people, plant and equipment from the adverse effects of ionising radiation contamination. It is the responsibility of nuclear health physics monitors to protect nuclear workers from radiation exposure by monitoring levels of contamination. Apprentices will learn to use specialist equipment to carry out this radiological protection monitoring; you will take readings of surface and airborne contamination rates and radiation dose rates. After this, you must safely and accurately record this data and respond accordingly.

Nuclear health physics monitors may also take on an advisory role within a nuclear facility team, providing advice on emergency scenarios and undertaking general activities related to the protection of these teams. Safety of staff and equipment is paramount to all nuclear facilities which make this apprenticeship especially important; having a dedicated and trained health monitor adds significant value toa nuclear plant as the role reinforces all safety measures and precautions.

Apprentices should expect varied working environments and locations as you may be working on any kind of nuclear site, including waste management, decommissioning and operational.
