Overview
Approved for delivery on the 22/01/2018, the nuclear operative, Intermediate apprenticeship standard provides a level 2, upon completion. This apprenticeship will typically take 24 months to complete, not including the End-Point Assessment Period.
What the course covers
This apprenticeship has two distinct routes. By the end of the apprenticeship, you will be qualified as either a Nuclear Decommissioning Operative, or a Nuclear Process Operative. Before specialising all apprentices will have experience and training in the core responsibilities and skills of a nuclear operative.
You will be responsible for the equipment and plant on a nuclear facility, meaning the work might be spread across many different environments within the facility. The work will either be operational or decommissioning, which means removing all radioactive, non-radioactive and contaminated plant from the environment. You will learn to work both independently and as part of a team, as well as showing an understanding of nuclear and radioactive safety procedures. All apprentices must display the correct attitude towards organisational safety and regulations.
Nuclear Decommissioning Operatives are responsible for the operation and surveillance of nuclear plant and equipment within their decommissioning phase. This includes all dismantling, removal and disposal of plant and equipment, using specialist techniques and equipment. On the other hand, Nuclear Process Operatives are responsible for carrying out plant process operations, including but not limited to fuel manufacture, nuclear reactors and waste processing.
