Overview

The nuclear scientist and nuclear engineer (degree) was approved for delivery on 03/09/2015. This Degree apprenticeship standard awards you with a level 6, integrated degree qualification when completed. The usual duration of this apprenticeship is 36 months, but this does not include the End-Point Assessment Period.

What the course covers

This apprenticeship equips you with the knowledge skills and behaviours to ensure that nuclear equipment and systems operate safely, efficiently and in an environmentally sustainable way. Your employer or professional body will set you requirements related to the operation of this equipment that you must meet. The fundamental knowledge needed for this role is an understanding of engineering and science principles and practices. Apprentices are expected to quickly possess a strong working knowledge of this technical information, to carry out a safety inspection and use of nuclear equipment.

Apprentices will develop disciplined skills corresponding to the job role you have been appointed to. These skills typically include design, plant performance enhancement, operational management, project management, and maintenance of safety standards. Suppose you encounter a problem concerning any of these skills and tasks. In that case, apprentices are expected to use their analytical thinking to provide innovative solutions.

Nuclear scientists and nuclear engineers need excellent communication skills to confidently interact with staff members of all levels from a variety of departments. You may also be expected to write reports or documentation, using written as well as verbal communication skills.
