Overview

This Higher nuclear technician apprenticeship standard will provide you with a level 5, qualification. This apprenticeship standard was approved on the 24/03/2017 and typically takes 36 months to complete. However, it is important to note that the duration of the apprenticeship standard stated does not include the End-Point Assessment period.

What the course covers

Nuclear technicians play an essential role in the nuclear industry by supporting scientists and engineers with all technical operations. Throughout this apprenticeship, you will develop a good understanding of the processes and procedures which form the day to day operational requirements of a nuclear facility. You will use your scientific knowledge, skills and behaviours to operate technical equipment and systems safely, efficiently and sustainably.

The purpose of your role will be to provide all the required technical support to enable engineers and technologists to function effectively, while also adhering to health and safety guidelines. Apprentices must learn to work independently and take responsibility for your work; however, you will be working within a multi-disciplinary team, so communication and teamwork skills are essential.

This is a task-focused role, and each employer and facility will have a different set of requirements. However, as an example, some tasks might include: setting up and operating equipment; preparing technical reports; sampling, testing, measuring and interpreting results; using computers; performing mathematical calculations; and using problem-solving techniques.
