Nuclear Welding Inspection Technician

Approved for delivery on the 27/08/2015, the nuclear welding inspection technician, Higher apprenticeship standard provides a level 4, upon completion. This apprenticeship will typically take 48 months to complete, not including the End-Point Assessment Period.

This apprenticeship aims to train apprentices with the knowledge, skills and behaviour, specific to the nuclear industry, to perform quality control and welding inspections. Nuclear welding inspection technicians follow exacting quality requirements as outlined in the nuclear industry standards, documentation and specifications. As this can be a hazardous industry, the quality and safety of all nuclear facilities are of paramount importance. You will be carrying out detailed observations, making detailed records, giving technical feedback, and providing challenge throughout the manufacturing process.

Apprentices will work on licensed nuclear sites or in manufacturing facilities that supply the nuclear industry. You may be inspecting waste management, decommissioning or constructing operational nuclear plants. Throughout the apprenticeship, you will become confident working under little supervision and taking responsibility for your work. At times you may work in a larger inspection team and must have the ability to listen and communicate.

Nuclear welding inspection technicians must have a thorough understanding of material science, specifically metallics. You will learn about their properties during welding, their compositions and each materials weldability. As well as scientific knowledge, apprentices are expected to understand welding technology, including the parameters, procedures and approval process.
