Overview
Approved for delivery on the 27/02/2018, the optical assistant, Intermediate apprenticeship standard provides a level 2, upon completion. This apprenticeship will typically take 12 months to complete, not including the End-Point Assessment Period.
What the course covers
An optical assistant provides a supporting role in the Optical retail industry. The primary responsibility of this role is interacting with customers and providing help and information to customers in the shop. Therefore, all apprentices must enjoy working with the public and feel able to connect with customers in both a friendly and professional manner. It is essential to be able to listen to customer needs and to be passionate about delivering a high-quality customer experience which meets both cosmetic and clinical needs.
As an apprentice, it will be your job to find spectacles for the customers and clients in the shop that suits their face and meet all of their clinical needs. To do this, it is essential to have excellent technical knowledge of both frames and lenses – the materials and the fittings. You will learn to take facial measurements and find glasses which are comfortable and do not damage the customer’s face or skin. You will use a range of tools and technical equipment to take measurements, adjust and repair spectacles.
Another critical skill in the role of an optical assistant is being able to convert your technical knowledge on frames and lenses into a clear and accessible language which customers can understand and engage with.
