What the course covers

Ordnance munitions and explosives (OME) professionals work in a variety of industries including defence, chemical, commercial, military, security, nuclear and analytic services. Within these industries, you may work for the government (MoD), a multi-national company, or an SME. This is a crucial role in both government and industry, meaning you may move between the two throughout your time in the position as OME professionals are central to maintaining national security.

As an apprentice, you will carry out numerous technical, engineering and scientific activities which may include laboratory-based investigations, engineering studies and scientific experimentation in their specialised field. The goal is for apprentices to be able to analyse and interpret technical information and concepts, and then use these to create new products, experiments or investigations. You will be expected to do this work autonomously with little supervision from managers; however, this is a team-based role and apprentices should be prepared to communicate and collaborate on all laboratory tasks and reports.

As well as scientific knowledge, apprentices will develop their understanding of business by identifying areas for improvement and proposing innovative ideas and solutions for better efficiency or productivity.
