Overview
Approved for delivery on the 10/07/2020, the ordnance munitions and explosives specialist (degree), Degree apprenticeship standard provides a level 7, integrated degree upon completion. This apprenticeship will typically take 36 months to complete, not including the End-Point Assessment Period.
What the course covers
This role is found within the Ordnance, munitions and explosives (OME) sector. It is available in a whole range of industries including defence, commercial, military security, nuclear and analytical services. Apprentices on this course will learn to provide specialist expertise, advice, guidance and direction towards OME solutions, to develop the UK OME defence and security system. You will be using a unique mix of chemistry, physics and engineering in this role; for example, you will be offering leadership on OME functionality happening at high temperatures and high mechanical strain rates not found in any other scientific field.
Apprentices will develop an understanding of OME lifecycles and learn to apply appropriate approaches to developing systems, including their interrelated dependencies and benefits. Apprentices must understand the broader context in which their approach sits, understanding how OME relates to government strategy on defence and security. You will be working in a challenging scientific, technical, political or business environment, meaning you will learn adaptability and productivity skills. It’s common for OME professionals to work in a multi-disciplinary team with people from various organisations within the OME sector, such as police, academia, government, armed forces and many others.
