Overview
The ordnance munitions explosives technician was approved for delivery on 13/05/2020. This Higher apprenticeship standard awards you with a level 4, qualification when completed. The usual duration of this apprenticeship is 30 months, but this does not include the End-Point Assessment Period.
What the course covers
This role sits within the Ordnance Munitions and Explosives (OME) sector in all kinds of organisations in both the public and private sectors. These might include the British Army, The Royal Navy, Royal Airforce, defence contractors, security services, mining and quarry services and the film and special effects industry. Apprentices will contribute to the design and operation of OME by preparing explosives. As well as this, you will have to carry out explosive tests and evaluations to checky they are fit for purpose. When completing this work, you must do so conscious of health and safety procedures and following the safe systems of work.
Some example roles and tasks include working with pyrotechnics in the film industry, explosives engineering in the mining industry and working with explosives and munitions in the armed forces. All OME technicians work within a multidisciplinary team, often with people from different organisations and industries within the OME sector. You may also be expected to interact and work with the general public.
As an apprentice you may be responsible for complying with legislative stipulations and occupational health policy, preventing fire and explosions, inspecting OME, preparing and setting up OME equipment and sharing technical advice and guidance with others.
