Overview
This Advanced organ builder apprenticeship standard will provide you with a level 3, qualification. This apprenticeship standard was approved on the 26/09/2017 and typically takes 36 months to complete. However, it is important to note that the duration of the apprenticeship standard stated does not include the End-Point Assessment period.
What the course covers
This apprenticeship has been developed to train apprentices to design, build, manufacture and repair organs. Apprentices will use both their labour and skill to create bespoke organs, using materials such as wood, leather, tin and lead. As well as construction, apprentices will train in repairing and restoring organs, and their constituent components to a high quality and standard. You will learn to be confident in the design and manufacture of organ components, as well as putting organ pipes onto speech and tuning them.
Those who are successful in the apprenticeship will be recognised and accredited by the Institute of British Organ Building (IBO) as a qualified organ builder. This means you will be eligible for employment by any of their associated businesses.
Throughout the apprenticeship, you will develop a core set of understandings which enable you to build and design organs to the highest quality. This includes knowledge of health and safety legislation, specifically concerning working at height and with heavy materials, the properties and limitations of the materials used to build organs, the essential hand and machine tools and equipment needed for the role, and the historical and practical design principles of organs.
