Outdoor Activity Instructor

Approved for delivery on the 24/09/2018, the outdoor activity instructor, Advanced apprenticeship standard provides a level 3, upon completion. This apprenticeship will typically take 12 months to complete, not including the End-Point Assessment Period.

An outdoor activity instructor supervises children and adults in a whole range of outdoor, and at times depending on the weather, indoor activities and pastimes. Apprentices may be employed by an organisation that specialises in a particular client group (children, young adults, disabled people, etc.), or a specific activity. In general, some of the activities which you might be conducting include climbing, cycling, surfing, canoeing, sailing, hill walking, archery, bushcraft, rock pooling, geology, plant identification, habitat or wildlife walks. All of these activities will occur at an entry-level, and outdoor activity instructors will often be supervised.

To be successful in this apprenticeship, you must have a passion and enthusiasm for the outdoors and physical activity. You will need to display a positive attitude to working outdoors and a respect for your environment. Apprentices will most likely be employed at outdoor adventure or education centres, nature reserves or national parks.

The primary responsibility of an outdoor activity instructor is to run safe and enjoyable sessions for your participants. You will prepare for the session by gathering information about the participants and the activity. Then you will deliver the session, making sure to brief the participants and maintain safety and encouragement. Finally, you will close the session, logging any issues and returning all equipment.
