Overview

Approved for delivery on the 16/04/2019, the packhouse line leader, Advanced apprenticeship standard provides a level 3, upon completion. This apprenticeship will typically take 18 months to complete, not including the End-Point Assessment Period.

What the course covers

This role is found on some of the largest supply chains in the UK. Packhouse line leaders work in food/plant packhouses, which collect produce and dispatch food either to the retailer or another warehouse for further processing. This apprenticeship trains you to take a supervisory role in one of these packhouses, providing a stimulating workplace for your staff. You will learn to solve problems and use your technical skills to ensure a smooth-running packhouse.

Apprentices will develop critical leadership and managing skills; you will be in charge of a variety of the perishable goods including plants, food and cut flowers, as well as responsible for how your team use the machinery and IT systems. At times a packhouse can be a pressured environment, as you are trying to meet the time, quality, food safety and customer targets. As such, you will need to work well under pressure and be able to manage a stressful environment.

The critical challenge to this role is ensuring that all perishable products (washed, cut, uncut, potted, packages etc.) are maintained at the correct storage conditions at all times to ensure product quality and food safety. Failure to adhere to the induvial items shelf-life could resort in waste and potentially hazardous products.
