Pest Control Technician

Overview

This Intermediate pest control technician apprenticeship standard will provide you with a level 2, qualification. This apprenticeship standard was approved on the 08/05/2018 and typically takes 18 months to complete. However, it is important to note that the duration of the apprenticeship standard stated does not include the End-Point Assessment period.

What the course covers

This apprenticeship aims to train individuals to regulate and manage species known as pests. These include those species which are perceived to be detrimental to a person’s health, environment, or the economy. Apprentices will work in a range of domestic and commercial settings throughout their training include offices, residents, manufacturing and industrial sites, warehouses, retail premises, hotels, restaurants, hospitals and schools.

As a pest control technician, there are two main pest problems that you will be dealing with. Firstly, there are stored product pests which infest and damage a wide range of materials such as foodstuffs and fabrics. Secondly, there are pests which cause significant public health threats and needed to be controlled to halt the spread of diseases or allergies.

Throughout the apprenticeship, you will develop critical knowledge of pest biology and behaviour, such as identifying vertebrate and invertebrate pests. You will use this knowledge to survey sites, identify levels of pest infestation, determine the appropriate actions to eradicate the pests and prevent reinfestation. At all times throughout your practice, you must adhere to safety legislation and procedures, especially when handling dangerous traps or chemicals.
