Overview
Approved for delivery on the 19/07/2019, the pipe welder, Advanced apprenticeship standard provides a level 3, upon completion. This apprenticeship will typically take 48 months to complete, not including the End-Point Assessment Period.
What the course covers
The purpose of this apprenticeship standard is to equip apprentices with the specialist skills and knowledge to excel in the pipe welding trade. You will be responsible for manually welding tubes and pipes to high-quality standards and integrity, using a minimum of two manual arc welding processes. You will learn how to competently and safely operate a range of equipment, machinery and tools.
This occupation is found in a wide range of sectors where piping systems are used for fluid transport and pressure containment. This includes engineering, construction, oil and gas, chemicals and pharmaceuticals, power generation, and brewery process plant and equipment. Employers range in size from small businesses to multi-national organisations.
Apprentices should expect to interact with a range of professionals including Engineers, Pipe Fitters, Riggers, Welding Inspectors, Quality control personnel and Insurance Inspectors. You will be responsible for the safety, quality, productivity and accuracy of your own work, ensuring all welds conform to the relevant pipe welding specification. Pipe Welders may hold a high level of responsibility, ranging from working autonomously during their planning and production activities to being an integrated part of a wider team under the guidance of a supervisor.
