Becoming a registered healthcare professional who diagnoses and treats problems affecting lower limbs
Overview
The podiatrist (degree) was approved for delivery on 14/05/2018. This Degree apprenticeship standard awards you with a level 6, integrated degree qualification when completed. The usual duration of this apprenticeship is 48 months, but this does not include the End-Point Assessment Period.
What the course covers
Their primary objective is to identify the problem, the cause and then the appropriate care and treatment.
Some of the ailments or treatments include nail and skin pathology, musculoskeletal conditions and general pain or wounds. The apprentice will combine their diagnosis and treatment with a discussion and education for continued care by the patient. Success in the diagnosis, treatment and post-treatment care stages is pivotal in reducing the risk of disability or dysfunction. Without podiatrists, many conditions would lead to surgery, including amputation.
The role is centred around caring and treating patients with potentially distressing conditions. As such, the apprentice requires specific values to succeed. These include being caring, comforting, honest and trustworthy. Additionally, the apprentice will work with a wide range of clients. Therefore, you will have to have confidence and show adaptability. Respecting your clients’ diversity, including their culture, heritage, privacy and needs, will be integral.
Successful adherence to these values and behaviours will provide the apprentice with the capacity to discover the appropriate treatment or care. Inability to listen or communicate with the patient will inevitably lead to a less successful result for the patient. The accomplishment of this apprenticeship provides eligibility for an application to the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). Acceptance to the HCPC allows you to become a registered podiatrist who can practice in the UK.
