What the course covers

The role of the Police Constable in the UK is undergoing significant critique and transformation. It is essential for the police service that new PCs are emotionally intelligent.

The PC will encounter several situations in which they will have to rapidly judge the behaviour of those present. As such, the apprentice must be capable of enduring physically demanding circumstances, as well as excelling at behavioural analysis. This is especially so when considering the variety of communities the PC will encounter. Being able to understand and process cultures and perspectives different from their own is integral.

Having a unique employment status, in which they have the right to take away someone else’s freedom, they must fully comprehend the consequences of their actions. Not only does this require significant intellectual and emotional intelligence, but the capacity to personally account for and then justify all their actions. Their accounting requires a distinct level of confidence, as it will take place occasionally in front of courts, and continuously in front of the public.

An apprentice must extensively learn the UK’s laws, along with how to manage a wide variety of tasks. These can include investigating crimes, conducting risk assessments, supporting victims and engaging with local communities.
