Policy Officer

Collaborating with the essential parties to synthesise and suggest government policies

Overview

The policy officer was approved for delivery on 02/02/2018. This Higher apprenticeship standard awards you with a level 4, qualification when completed. The usual duration of this apprenticeship is 24 months, but this does not include the End-Point Assessment Period.

What the course covers

During this training, an apprentice will learn how to shape and recommend government policy. Integral to this is the ability to synthesize the needs of various affected groups and institutions. This includes researching evidence and support for a policy with stakeholders and experts, as well as negotiating with public and private sector parties.

It is essential for policy officers to be self-assured so they can negotiate with established professionals. Furthermore, they will need to have good team-working and communication skills to navigate operating with various people and organisations.

A policy offer must be not only aware of the specifics of a particular policy and its impact but also be able to view the bigger picture. You will not deliver policies in a vacuum; being able to consider the political, commercial and historical pressures is integral. An extensive understanding of how the government operates, along with the legal system, will make you a stand-out candidate for this apprenticeship.

This apprenticeship involves numerous pressures and responsibilities, but the potential positive impact is especially rewarding.
