Overview
Approved for delivery on the 24/09/2018, the port operative, Intermediate apprenticeship standard provides a level 2, upon completion. This apprenticeship will typically take 12 months to complete, not including the End-Point Assessment Period.
What the course covers
A Port Operative will take on essential roles across the port to ensure that businesses and passengers can arrive and depart safely and punctually. They will also be the key figure in loading and unloading cargo, including anything from cars to raw materials to food. If the port is large, the Port Operative is likely to specialise over the course of the apprenticeship so they would partake in one primary task.
One of the two common occupations for this apprenticeship is to become a Cargo Operative. This entails handling all the vessels in the port across a variety of locations. It is their job to handle and process safely and effectively all commodities, such as break bulk, liquid bulk, dry bulk and containers. They are the first cog in the operations for storage, warehousing and distribution.
The second most common occupation is to become a Passenger, Ferry and Cruise Operative. In this role, the apprentice would be dealing with all the customers and their belongings. This includes everything from unloading vehicles to searching and screening documentation or passengers. Their customer-facing role requires a high level of communication and customer service.
